Diagnose the difference between expensive clicks, weak conversion and poor qualification before cutting spend.
Separate the three costs
Cost per click describes traffic. Cost per lead describes submissions or another defined lead action. Cost per qualified lead describes enquiries that meet your sales criteria. A reduction in one does not guarantee a reduction in the others.
Write the definitions next to your dashboard. A WhatsApp button tap is not automatically a lead, and a duplicate form submission should not become a second opportunity.
Use a simple diagnostic calculation
Illustrative example: S$1,000 spend buys 200 clicks and produces 20 enquiries, of which 5 qualify. CPC is S$5, cost per enquiry is S$50 and cost per qualified enquiry is S$200.
A second test spends the same amount, produces 15 enquiries and 8 qualified enquiries. The raw lead cost rises to about S$66.67, while qualified lead cost falls to S$125. Cutting that test because the headline CPL rose would miss the improvement.
Find the leak before changing bids
- Irrelevant searches: inspect search terms and add carefully chosen exclusions.
- Weak message match: compare the ad promise with the first screen of the landing page.
- Form failure: test validation, submission and delivery.
- Poor qualification: clarify scope, eligibility or price context where it helps buyers self-select.
- Slow follow-up: inspect handling before blaming the traffic source.
Change one meaningful variable
Keep a record of the change, expected effect and review window. Allow the sales cycle to mature and inspect absolute lead counts as well as ratios. Small samples can move sharply after only one sale.
Quality Score can help diagnose ad relevance and landing-page issues, but Google describes it as a diagnostic rather than a business KPI. Optimise for useful customer outcomes.
