A practical diagnostic checklist for unclear offers, broken enquiry paths, weak tracking and disconnected marketing.
Check the offer before buying traffic
Choose a priority service and ask a colleague to explain it using only the public page. If the audience, scope or next step is unclear, write down the missing information. This is a more actionable starting point than deciding the whole website “does not convert”.
Test these seven points
- Offer: the heading and service detail describe the same thing.
- Mobile: the menu, enquiry button and form work with the keyboard open.
- Evidence: the work shown is relevant, current enough and honestly labelled.
- Search: important pages can be crawled and have a sensible canonical URL.
- Ads: the advertised promise continues on the destination page.
- Measurement: a real completed enquiry is distinguishable from a button click.
- Follow-up: a named person receives and handles new enquiries.
Keep a defect log
For each failure, record the URL, device, action, expected result and actual result. Attach a screenshot when it explains the issue. Assign an owner and verify the fix through the public site. “Mobile looks strange” becomes useful when it specifies the overlapping controls and viewport.
Prioritise failures that stop the task
Repair missing content and broken forms before polishing decorative effects. Then improve unclear scope, weak navigation and missing evidence. Treat marketing experiments separately: changing five channels at once makes it difficult to understand what worked.
For a modest first pass, improve one service page and its enquiry path. Compare the next set of qualified enquiries with an equivalent previous period, while accounting for changes in spend and demand.
Choose the right next step
A functional website may only need better content or tracking. A structural problem may justify a rebuild. Use website design, SEO and Google Ads as separate workstreams with a shared business objective, rather than treating every problem as a reason to buy everything.
